When You’re Doing All the “Right Things” but Still Feel Disconnected
Forward Path with Melissa: Life and Marriage God’s Way – Episode 42: When You’re Doing All the “Right Things” but Still Feel Disconnected
Episode Overview
You’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, followed the steps, and checked the boxes — and you still feel disconnected. In this episode, Melissa looks at why that usually isn’t a lack of effort. It’s a lack of relationship. Then she walks through four things that help rebuild it: presence and attention, honesty, vulnerability, and delight. You’ll leave knowing which one to practice this week.
Key Takeaways
-
Doing the right things can build a life that looks faithful from the outside and still leave you lonely. A checklist can give you order. It cannot give you connection. The disconnect usually isn’t “you need a better system.” It’s that the relationship got replaced by the tasks meant to serve it.
-
Consistency still matters. Empty consistency is still empty. Last week named the difference between obedience and abiding. You can obey the reading plan, the date night, the check-in text — and still not be with the person in front of you, including God.
-
God isn’t a vending machine. Your spouse isn’t a project. A friend isn’t an assignment. John 17:3 says eternal life is to know God. Know. Not just perform.
-
Four things are often missing when tasks have replaced the relationship: presence and attention, honesty, vulnerability, and delight. Most people are not missing all four. Name the actual gap.
-
Presence is being where you are. Attention is what you do with your mind once you’re there. Psalm 46:10 and Hebrews 2:1 call us to be still and to pay careful attention so we do not drift.
-
Honesty is telling the truth about what’s going on in you — without dressing it up, dumping it, or hiding it. Feelings are information, not always facts. Ephesians 4:25: put off falsehood and speak truthfully.
-
Vulnerability lets someone into that truth. Comfort is being at ease. Vulnerability is a willingness to share the unpolished parts. Wisdom still matters. Don’t open the door to someone who keeps harming you. James 5:16 includes confession as one form of vulnerability.
-
Delight is choosing gladness toward a person, not merely duty toward them. Zephaniah 3:17 says the Lord takes great delight in you. You can do all the right things and never enjoy the people you’re doing them with. That’s disconnection with a gold star.
-
You don’t own the other person’s heart. If you take a step and they don’t meet you there, that is information. It does not mean closeness is impossible, and it does not mean you were wrong to try.

-
Ask: Have I been relating, or have I been managing?
-
Pick one of the four: presence and attention, honesty, vulnerability, or delight. Practice that one this week.
-
At the end of the week, don’t ask whether you did more. Ask whether you got nearer.
