Devotional for Trust
Have you ever had to do a trust test during a team-building exercise? They are so hard for me to do! Usually, it includes you being blindfolded and up on a platform where you are supposed to just trustingly fall backward and allow your (coworkers / friends / team) to catch you. Have I mentioned how hard they are for me to do?!
Trust. The definition of trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
Given the state of our society currently and the disparity between that and the definition above, it is not hard to understand why trust is wavering in our fellow mankind. I have had people not follow through on their word. And people have hurt and disappointed me in the past. So often I do things myself. I say it is independence but really it is anxiety and lack of trust in the other person.
But how is your trust in God?
This is a tough question. At times, our trust can waver in Him, too. We may cognitively believe and know that our Lord is good and faithful, but sometimes in the moment of despair, we don't feel that to be true. So we attempt to be independent and do it ourselves. But that never ends up working out well, at least not in the long run.
We’ve all struggled to trust—God and people. Sometimes because people have shattered our trust, sometimes because prayers felt unanswered. That doesn’t make you faithless; it makes you human. The good news? God isn’t shocked by our wavering. He’s patient, kind, and keeps proving Himself faithful even when we’re scared to fall backward.
So my hope for today is that you close your eyes and fall backward with the trust that God will catch you!
In marriage, trust looks like:
- Believing your spouse has your back even when you disagree
- Sharing your real fears, failures, and feelings without fear of judgment
- Letting your spouse lead in an area where you normally control
- Rebuilding trust one kept promise at a time after it’s been broken
Healing broken trust in marriage looks like:
- Choosing to trust again in small things today, even when the big hurt still stings
- Praying together, ‘Lord, help us trust You and each other again’
- Giving and receiving grace daily (‘I’m still hurt, but I’m choosing to trust God is healing us’)
Take the time to read the below bible scriptures and truly focus on what they are saying to you. Some passages may touch you differently than others. Writing down the verses in your own hand is helpful for some individuals. Possibly looking up the verses in your Bible may be beneficial. I use a NIV bible translation. Or reading them over and over to commit to memory. Whatever method works best for you to experience God's words and feel closer to Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Psalm 37:3
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Psalm 37:5-6
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
Isaiah 26:3-4
You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.
Psalm 28:7-8
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him in song. The Lord is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Nahum 1:7
The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.
Jeremiah 17:7-8
"But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
Psalm 13:5-6
But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me.
Isaiah 12:2
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.
Psalm 56:3-4
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Here's a short prayer if you're struggling to find the words:
Father, I want to trust You, but sometimes I’m terrified to let go. People have let me down, and prayers have felt unanswered. Thank You that You never lie, never leave, and never fail. Catch me today as I choose—again—to fall backward into Your arms. Heal the places I’ve been hurt so I can trust my spouse and others too. Grow my trust in You one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Try one of these today:
- Tell your spouse (or God) one specific area you’re struggling to trust right now.
- Let your spouse handle one thing today that you normally control—and thank them for it.
- Read Proverbs 3:5-6 out loud together and pray it over each other by name.
I sincerely pray that these bible verses meet you where you are today and you allow yourself to trust in our Heavenly Father! He knows what is best for you in all situations!
God Bless!
