Devotional for Finances

Money is one of the biggest sources of stress, shame, and arguments—for singles, married couples, parents, empty-nesters… everyone. But money itself isn’t the problem. It’s what money reveals: fear, control, control, greed, or lack of trust in God.

The truth is simple and life-changing: Everything belongs to God (Psalm 24:1). We’re just managers of whatever He’s entrusted to us—whether that’s a lot or a little, whether we’re single or married, young or old.

We all bring money baggage:

  • Growing up with “never enough” or “spend it all”
  • Debt that feels like a life sentence
  • Comparison that steals today’s joy
  • Secret spending or secret saving

That doesn’t make you a failure; it makes you human. The incredible news? Jesus became poor so we could become rich in every way that truly matters (2 Corinthians 8:9). He’s not ashamed of your bank account. He invites you to bring every dollar—and every worry—to Him.

God-honoring stewardship looks like:

  • Giving the first portion back to God with a cheerful heart of gratitude
  • Living with open hands instead of clenched fists
  • Choosing contentment over comparison—no matter what social media says
  • Making decisions with eternity in view, not just this month’s bills
  • Trusting that your Provider is bigger than your paycheck

Take the time to read the scriptures below and truly focus on what they are saying to you. Some passages may touch you differently than others. Writing down the verses in your own hand is helpful for some individuals. Possibly looking up the verses in your Bible may be beneficial. I use a NIV bible translation. Or reading them over and over to commit to memory. Whatever method works best for you to experience God’s words and feel closer to Him.

Proverbs 3:9-10

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Malachi 3:10

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

Matthew 6:24

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Here’s a short prayer if you’re struggling to find the words:

Father, money stresses me out and sometimes feels like it owns me. Forgive me for letting it become my master. Thank You that Jesus became poor so I could be rich in You. Teach me to hold everything with open hands—my income, my debts, my dreams. Provide what I need today and grow my trust in You tomorrow. Use whatever You’ve given me to bless others and bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Try one of these today:

  • Pray over your bank account or budget for 2 minutes—thank God for what’s there and ask Him to multiply it for His kingdom.
  • Give something away today (money, time, or an item) as an act of trust.
  • Write down three things money can’t buy that you already have because of Jesus.

Your worth is not your net worth. Your security is not your savings account. Your Provider is on the throne—and He’s crazy about you.

God bless you and every dollar He’s entrusted to you,

Melissa
